William J. Knafel grew up in South Akron, Ohio and graduated from Central High School in 1945. A prominent Akron Pontiac dealer, Knafel embraced drag racing from the beginning. NHRA, NASCAR, IHRA and AHRA - he was the force behind the fearsome Pontiac "Tin Indians" and several other renowned cars. Knafel also did early testing for Pontiac's GTO and Trans Am programs. As a race team owner, Bill's 200-plus national and world championships hav yet to be surpassed by any stock class drag racing team. Over the years there were 42 Pontiacs in the "Tin Indian" family.
