1950 GMC - Although GMC enjoyed great success building war vehicles, the truck business was elusive. After WWII, International Harvester commanded the market and it wasn't until 1949 that GMC began making significant gains on market share from them. In 1950, for the first time GMC out produced International Harvester in trucks. However, the real success came in the under 5,000 lb. GVW class.
Here is where the pickup really shown, and it had features such as 228-cid inline six with 96 horsepower. Improvements were made to the electrical system and airplane-type shocks were introduced. The pickup, panel truck, canopy express, as well as suburban, were all based on this chassis. As time moved on additional features were added that gave the pickup truck features found in luxury automobiles and that trend continues today.
