First of the fire-breathing Firebirds named after the Sports Car Club of America's late-'60s Trans-American racing series for production compact "sedans". The '69, actually a $725 option package announced at the Chicago Auto Show in February, came with a potent Ram-Air 400V-8; four-on-the-four; the expected heavy-duty suspension, steering and brakes; and rear spoiler, simulated front-fender air outlets, functional twin-scoop hood, name decals, and white paint set off by broad, blue, dual dorsal racing stripes. A special tunnel-port 303 small-block engine was allegedly available, but production is doubtful.
